[Somkerék] SOMKERÉK (Sintereag, Rumania today) is an old Hungarian village in county Szolnok-Doboka, whose history dates back to the Hungarian Conquest 896. The originally Catholic church of Virgin Mary was built between 1327-1333, by Domonkos Gombás, a local Hungarian noble. Among the numerous devastations, the deadliest were by Basta, the cruel Habsburg mercenary commander, in 1602, the Tursks in 1660, the Habsburgs in 1704. These wars decimated the Hungarian population and other ethnicities started to infiltrate in the region.
The damaged church was rebuilt by Mária Bánffy and Zsuzsanna Szepesi, in 1761.
